OAK PARK, IL — The building that housed the beloved Felony Franks will soon become home to a new location for a local seafood restaurant. Surf’s Up, which currently has two Chicagoland stores, has already begun transforming the 6247 W. North Ave. storefront, but does plan to carry on one Felony Franks tradition: hiring ex-offenders, according to former Felony Franks owner Deno Andrews.
Former Felony Franks owner Deno Andrews called the shift “bittersweet” in a post on Facebook. He offered his support to the Oak Park couple who owns Surf’s Up. Andrews wrote, “[I] hope that you will support these fine people as much as you supported us all these years.”
Surf’s Up, which currently has locations at 713 Roosevelt, Maywood, and 2236 E.71st, Chicago, is a seafood lover’s paradise. The menu features fried lobster po’ boys, grilled Alaskan snow crab legs, catfish dinners, and more. Diners can also fill up on buffalo wings and fried biscuits dusted with powdered sugar.
Many Oak Park residents were heartbroken when Felony Franks closed in November due to ongoing financial struggles. Nevertheless, it seems like locals will be welcoming Surf’s Up with open arms (and mouths!).
Fans of Felony Franks responded to Andrews’s news by showing enthusiasm for the new restaurant and the fact that Surf’s Up will follow in the restaurant’s footsteps and hire ex-offenders. One Facebook user wrote that they were “glad the new owners will be continuing [the Felony Franks] hiring practices,” adding that “it will be great to see a new business going into that space.”
