Surfing Fiji On The Move

Last month (February) has been a busy one for surfing with several competitions like the Craig McElrath Memorial, the Druku Memorial and a coaching course being conducted.

This year’s Powerade Junior Pro presented by Cloudbreak on March 25-27 is shaping up to be a great event. Several countries are sending surfers so our local Fijian surfers will have the opportunity to show their talents at international level.  The waves at Sigatoka Sand Dunes have always provided challenging surf which can catch many surfers off guard.

Lock the dates in and get to the Sigatoka Sand Dunes to see some exciting surfing and cheer the locals on.

Boardriding Clubs in Fiji are a relatively new concept in Fiji. In Australia and America some of the Boardriding Clubs are celebrating 50 years. Just recently in Australia they had a national tournament for Boardriding clubs after conducting local, regional and state qualifying rounds just to make the national tournament.

The FSA is trying to encourage and develop Boardriding clubs in Fiji and so far there are 8 clubs.  This is a great start and those volunteers involved in running these clubs have embraced the whole concept.  Local boardriding clubs conduct monthly activities where they clean-up beaches, promote healthy lifestyles, have coaching sessions, social gatherings and some have surfing competitions. From Suva through to Nadi you’ll find a local board riding club who will welcome new people with open arms.

In early April, each of the clubs will be hosting a “Come-N-Try” day so watch for the advertising.

Next Saturday will see the first Fiji National Junior surfing squad come together. Top junior surfers from Wailoaloa, Nabila, Momi, Coral Coast/ Vunaniu, Pacific Harbour and Suva have been invited to attend. The training will see top Fijian coaches like Lesi Navuwai, Inia Nakalevu and Romeo McKellar conducting proceedings The focus will be on technique mainly but also covering competition strategies to ensure they reach their full potential.
