The sun’s out and the pups are out in California, for the annual Surf City Surf Dog Competition.

Dozens of dogs flocked to Huntington beach on Saturday (local time) from across Southern California to raise money for charity by catching some waves.

But it wasn’t all fun and games; it was a serious competition and the pooches were up against each other to become top dog.

“Our surfer dogs are judged on different points like how long they’ve ridden the waves, style points, so it’s a lot like regular human surfers,” organiser Marcie Taylor told the Associated Press.

There were even two international competitors, two from Brazil and one from Canada.

Australian kelpie Abbie Girl was the entrant who had been competing the longest, with this year being her 10th on the waves.

But the final victory went to Sugar, a local, who beat more than 40 other competitors.

“Sugar got a chance to raise money for the SPCA this year in Orange County and that’s amazing,” owner Ryan Rustin said.

“At first we just were surfing, but now we have an opportunity to raise money and give back.”

This year was the ninth year of the competition.
